Adobe acquires Macromedia
The end of the FreeHand era?

Adobe Systems Inc. has announced its final decision to acquire the software maker Macromedia Inc. for approximately $3.4 billion in stock. Under the terms of the agreement, approved by the boards of both companies, Macromedia shareholders will receive 0.69 shares of Adobe Systems Inc. for each Macromedia share. On 15 April 2005 Macromedia stock was worth $41.86 a share.
Given the potential, the proprietary technologies, the collaboration and the popularity of formats such as PDF and Flash, the companies have every opportunity to build a single platform combining rich functionality with the ability to run applications on any platform and any operating system. The combination of the enormous capabilities and creative potential of the two leading companies will make it possible to introduce innovations that change people’s fundamental ideas about interacting and working with information.
